Coats for Kỳ Sơn

Huyện Kỳ Sơn, located in the western highlands of Nghệ An Province, is one of Vietnam’s most remote and mountainous districts. Bordering Laos, the region is defined by steep terrain, winding rivers, and dense forests that isolate many of its villages from urban centers. Life here is shaped by the land—families often rely on subsistence farming, growing rice, corn, and vegetables on terraced fields carved into the hillsides. Infrastructure remains limited, with some communities accessible only by narrow, unpaved roads or footpaths, making access to healthcare, education, and markets a persistent challenge.

The district is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including the Thái, Khơ Mú, H’Mông, and Hoa peoples, each preserving distinct languages, customs, and spiritual practices. Traditional stilt houses, vibrant textiles, and ancestral rituals remain central to daily life. Despite economic hardship, there is a strong sense of community and resilience. Local efforts to improve rural development—such as expanding road networks and promoting sustainable agriculture—are slowly helping families build more stable futures while honoring their cultural heritage.

A heartfelt thank you to Chi Lan Tran, GGB’s local goodwill ambassador in Vietnam, for her extraordinary efforts in delivering 851 warm coats to elementary students (Grades 1–5) across four schools in the mountainous region.

Chi Lan navigated long, difficult roads to reach these remote communities, where temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Her dedication ensured that hundreds of children are now better protected against the cold—and reminded us all of the warmth that comes from compassion in action.
