Freedom to Move – Tri Tôn

Year:

2019

Location:

Tri Tôn, An Giang, Vietnam

Beneficiary:

Nghĩa in Tri Tôn District

Project Details:

Nghĩa is paralyzed in one arm and one leg due to stroke aftereffects. For years, his wife has accompanied him to the hospital daily so he could sit and sell lottery tickets—his only source of income. She also sells tickets at their doorstep while caring for their mentally ill son and abandoned grandchild.

Nghĩa’s wife served as both caregiver and co-earner, tirelessly supporting the family through years of hardship. Their eldest daughter lives in poverty in Cần Thơ, working as a laborer to make ends meet. Their middle son, 34 years old, suffers from a severe mental illness and was abandoned by his wife, leaving behind a child now under the family’s care. The youngest daughter, 33, works in Bình Dương but is currently hospitalized in Tri Tôn, adding further emotional and financial strain to the household.

When gifted a mobility chair by a GGB representative, Nghĩa was overcome with emotion. He cried with joy, saying his family had endured so much hardship—and now, for the first time in years, he could move independently and continue earning a living. That night, he said he would sleep in the chair out of sheer happiness.
