Supporting Families in Pa Vệ Sủ, Lai Châu Province

Year:

2023

Location:

Mường Tè District, Lai Chau, Vietnam

Beneficiary:

Families in Pa Vệ Sủ, Lai Châu Province

Project Details:

Lai Châu Province, located in Vietnam’s remote Northwest region, is a land of striking natural beauty and cultural richness. Surrounded by towering mountains and deep valleys, it is one of the country’s most isolated areas, with limited urban development and challenging terrain. The climate is cool and misty, ideal for terraced rice farming and herbal cultivation, and the region’s dramatic landscape includes the famous Ô Quy Hồ Pass, which connects Lai Châu to neighboring Lào Cai.

The province is home to over 20 ethnic groups, each with distinct languages, customs, and traditions. The largest communities include the Thái, H’mông, Dao, and Hà Nhì peoples. These groups maintain vibrant cultural identities through traditional clothing, architecture, and spiritual practices. Many live in stilt houses or earthen homes adapted to the mountainous terrain, and their livelihoods often revolve around farming, weaving, and herbal medicine.

Despite economic challenges, Lai Châu’s communities are deeply resilient. Cultural transmission is strong, with elders teaching younger generations through festivals, music, and craft-making. Textiles—especially handwoven and embroidered garments—play a central role in both cultural expression and economic survival. Local languages are widely spoken, though Vietnamese is used in schools and government.

Lai Châu remains a vital part of Vietnam’s heritage, offering a glimpse into centuries-old traditions that continue to thrive in harmony with nature. Its people embody strength, creativity, and a deep connection to the land, making the province a powerful symbol of cultural preservation and community spirit.

GGB Hampers of Hope: Supporting Families in Pa Vệ Sủ, Lai Châu Province

In the remote village of Pa Vệ Sủ, nestled deep within the mountainous Mường Tè District of Lai Châu Province, 652 underprivileged families received a lifeline of compassion and care through the GGB Hampers of Hope initiative.

Each GGB Hamper was thoughtfully packed with essential food items to support a family’s basic nutritional needs:

Rice, instant noodles, sugar, spices, fish sauce, salt, cooking oil, and canned fish—simple but vital staples for daily survival in one of Vietnam’s most challenging terrains.

Our local ambassador, Chi Lan Tran, went above and beyond by personally delivering the hampers, navigating a long and treacherous mountain drive to reach the village. In addition to the food aid, she generously donated 254 warm toques, ensuring that families—especially children and elders—could stay protected during the cold season.

This project was made possible through the unwavering support and generosity of our donors and volunteers. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us bring warmth, nourishment, and hope to Pa Vệ Sủ. Your kindness travels far—across mountains, borders, and into the lives of those who need it most.
