GGB Distribution in Jakarta

In Jakarta, Indonesia, many low-income families live in overcrowded informal settlements known as kampungs. These communities often consist of homes built from scrap materials, lacking proper infrastructure and basic services. Frequent flooding—caused by poor drainage and low elevation—damages fragile housing and disrupts daily life. Access to clean water and sanitation is limited, with shared toilets and open drains contributing to serious health risks. Most residents work in informal, low-wage jobs without job security, making it difficult to afford food, education, or healthcare. Children often struggle to stay in school, and families face deep inequality despite living in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing cities.

To support children in these communities, GGB volunteers in Canada prepared backpacks filled with essential hygiene items, undergarments, seasonal clothing for boys and girls, and lightweight footwear. These culturally respectful supplies were designed to help children feel clean, confident, and cared for. Although not all backpacks reached Jakarta due to logistical challenges, our team adapted on the ground—distributing what we could with heartfelt improvisation. The joy on the children’s faces made every effort worthwhile.

Our first distribution day delivered 80 food hampers to underprivileged families. The second outreach brought support directly to the homes of 11 widows. We are deeply grateful to A-Ling, A-Sing, Kasun, Mary, YanYan, Lina, Thomas, Andy, Thomas Jefferson, Sugi, Eva, and KEZ for their time and kindness.
