Project Details:
The residents of Hospicio de San Jose Home for the Aged in Barili, Cebu, anywhere from 30 to 60 in number, are elderly individuals who have found a place of comfort and care in their later years. Many come from humble backgrounds, having lived lives of quiet resilience—often as farmers, laborers, or homemakers in rural communities. Now in their senior years, they carry with them rich personal histories, deep cultural traditions, and a quiet dignity shaped by decades of experience.
At the hospice, they are supported by compassionate caregivers and volunteers who provide not only medical and physical assistance, but also emotional companionship. Despite the challenges of aging, many residents remain spirited and grateful, finding joy in simple routines, shared meals, and occasional visits from donors or community members. Their days are often filled with prayer, storytelling, and moments of reflection.
This home is more than just a shelter—it’s a sanctuary where elders are treated with respect and love, and where their presence is honored as a vital part of the community’s fabric2.
GGB provided personal hygiene kits, food staples, medicines, vitamins, and small gifts to help meet the residents’ daily needs and lift their spirits. Each set of supplies is intended to last approximately one week per person.
GGB Goodwill Ambassador Dennis Reyes once again joined the Day of Giving alongside members of the Church of the Holy Family, delivering these care packages and spending time with the residents. The visit was bittersweet, as some of the elders Dennis had connected with the previous year had since passed. Yet there was comfort in knowing they spent their final days in dignity and peace, rather than in hardship on the streets.
The hospice continues to receive support from generous donors and is actively renovating its facilities to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for its residents. Next year marks a significant milestone—100 years of service—a testament to the enduring compassion of the community and organizations like GGB and the Church of the Holy Family. This centennial celebration will honor a legacy of care and the enduring hope found in acts of humanity.
