Support for Students in Khau Vai

Year:

2018

Location:

Hà Giang, Vietnam

Beneficiary:

Students in Khau Vai

Project Details:

Life in Khau Vai Commune is shaped by rugged terrain, ethnic traditions, and economic hardship. Residents rely heavily on subsistence farming, and access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure remains limited.

Nestled in the remote mountains of Mèo Vạc District, Hà Giang Province, Khau Vai Commune is home to several ethnic minority groups, including the Hmong, Dao, and Tay. The landscape is breathtaking—marked by limestone peaks, terraced fields, and winding roads—but its beauty belies the daily challenges faced by local families. Most residents depend on small-scale agriculture, growing corn, rice, and vegetables on steep hillsides. Livestock such as goats and chickens are common, and many families live in wooden or earthen homes without modern amenities.

Access to basic services is limited. Schools are often under-resourced, and children may walk long distances to attend class. Healthcare facilities are sparse, with many relying on traditional remedies or traveling to district centers for treatment. During winter, temperatures drop sharply, and families struggle to stay warm, especially in homes without insulation or heating. Economic opportunities are scarce, prompting some to migrate seasonally for labor.

Despite these hardships, Khau Vai is rich in cultural heritage. The commune is best known for the Khau Vai Love Market, held once a year, where former lovers reunite and communities celebrate with music, food, and traditional dress. This event reflects the deep emotional and social bonds that sustain the community. Life in Khau Vai is a blend of resilience, tradition, and quiet endurance—where every act of support, like warm clothing or a new school kitchen, makes a lasting difference

GGB bought 600 warm jackets and 600 pairs of socks for students at Khau Vai Primary, Secondary, and Kindergarten in Mèo Vạc District, Hà Giang Province. This timely support brought much-needed warmth and comfort to children facing the harsh northern winter, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged families in this remote mountainous region.

In addition to clothing, GGB contributed towards the construction of a kitchen at Khau Vai Kindergarten, significantly enhancing the daily living and learning environment for the youngest students. These efforts not only addressed immediate material needs but also uplifted the spirits of the entire community—offering a powerful reminder that they are seen, supported, and not alone.
