Ata-Monubu Community in Paquibato
Project Details:
The Ata-Monubu are an indigenous community residing in the mountainous Paquibato District, approximately two hours north of Davao City. Descended from early pygmy settlers who inhabited the Philippine islands over 25,000 years ago, the Ata-Monubu carry a rich cultural heritage that faces increasing threats from modernization and poverty.
To help preserve their traditions and promote sustainable livelihoods, the School for Living Traditions (SLT) was established in Paquibato in 2018. Now in its third year, the SLT continues to empower the Ata-Monubu by integrating ancestral knowledge into daily life—especially through mentorship between elders and youth.
The Weaving Center in Sitio Damilag
One of the SLT’s key initiatives is the Weaving Center in Sitio Damilag, located in Barangay Mapula. This center serves as a cultural and economic hub where skilled artisans teach traditional weaving techniques to younger generations. With over 500 students enrolled, the center fosters pride, continuity, and community resilience.
To further support this initiative, GGB, in partnership with the Rotary Club of South Davao, donated weaving equipment and essential supplies. Goodwill Ambassador, Dennis Reyes, gave the following items to the community:
- Weaving Loom (branded with GGB as a gesture of goodwill)
- Suyod (comb for fiber preparation)
- Benting (weaving tool)
- Additional food and basic supplies to support daily needs
This initiative not only strengthens cultural identity but also opens pathways for economic growth through the sale of handcrafted textiles. By supporting the Ata-Monubu, we help ensure that their traditions endure—and that their future is woven with dignity, opportunity, and pride.
